Brand new for 2019, we are delighted to announce the addition of a bespoke Science area, THE BELLADRUM BOFFINARIUM to Scotland’s largest family music and arts festival.
Located in the Walled Garden area of the festival and housed within a giant bamboo dome, the Boffinarium will be a home to all things science and discovery. From hands on mind boggling experiments, interactive science shows, fascinating talks and debates, there will be entertainment for all the family!
Highlights of the programme include; Late Night Stargazing Sessions with Astronomer Stephen Mackintosh from Highland Astronomy 🔭🌕⭐️, Professor Pumpernickel’s Family Science Show, a look at Opportunities in the Space Industry👩🚀👨🚀 with the Scottish Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications, and a panel on ‘Women in Science’ 👩🔬 hosted by Skills Development Scotland and featuring guest speakers, Catriona Chambers (Spacex), Louise Gordon (Lifescan), Dr Antonia Pritchard (UHI), Dr Heidi Burdett (Lyell Centre) and Emma Comrie (Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science).
There will also be a series of presentations in partnership with The Royal Society of Edinburgh featuring, Dr Heidi Burdett’s ‘Discover Scotland’s answer to the Great Barrier Reef and the threats it faces’🐬🐟 ; ‘Forensic Science Decision Making’ with Emma Comrie and Dr Mhairi Aitken’s ‘Blame it on the Algorithm’.
At the LifeScan stand, there will be a number of exhibits related to diabetes. There will be a chance to learn about the sugar and fat content of everyday foods and how that relates to diabetes – a real eye opener for kids and parents alike! At the same time you can learn about how blood glucose test strips, which are used by millions of diabetics around the world, are manufactured through the ever popular ‘Big Strip’ construction puzzle.
The UHI STEM engagement team will be on site with various activities including hosting a Science Quiz on the Saturday night. Strathclyde University will be taking a big look at the nano-world with Really Small Science experiments, Trees4 Life will be having a look at how groups of people with seeds, spades, chickpeas and some bloodymindedness can kickstart a run of ecological change and bring a more vibrant, diverse wildlife back to the Highlands, the NHS Organ Donation team will be on site and Skills Development Scotland will have hands on activities running throughout the weekend also.
